I really didn't think this movie was as disappointing as most.
I don't rank it with the better Ridley Scott works like Alien,
Blade Runner, The Duellists, or Thelma & Louise, but I'm not
unhappy I saw this film. My main problem with it was that the
story didn't really seem to amount to anything special that
merited the amount of money and time the filmmakers put into
it. It could very well have been made for TV at a lower
budget. None of the characters (Columbus included) really
captivated me. I really didn't care much for the Moxica (sp?)
antagonist fellow either. He was very cliched, in terms of
dress (he looked like some sort of heavy metal cock rocker or
something), speech, and physicality: he just seemed to be the
generic "bad guy" so that the audience would have somebody to
hate. The movie did seem to get a bit slow after the battle
between Columbus' men and Moxica's renegades too. Even with
the problems though, there were quite a few parts I really
enjoyed. Columbus' realization they were near land up to the
actual landing was lovely, many of the battle scenes between
Columbus' men and Moxica's were stunningly filmed, and as has
been mentioned by many, the ships were gorgeous. So, overall,
I still did like the movie. Disappointed that it wasn't the
grandiose epic I thought it would be, but still interesting
enough to be paid for and viewed.
